The Eastern Loggerhead Shrike is both a songbird and a bird of
prey. It's unique. And for the past fifty years, it has been disappearing
from the Canadian grasslands and cattle pastures where it was once
a familiar sight.
In Canada, there are only a few dozen pairs left in the wild,
found in just a handful
of locations in Manitoba and Ontario.
No one knows the
precise reasons for this decline, but a dedicated group of
people — partners in the Eastern
Loggerhead Shrike Recovery Program — is trying to reverse it. These biologists,
conservationists, members of both
federal and provincial government, farmers, ranchers and other
landowners are working together
to bring the Eastern Loggerhead Shrike
back from the brink of extinction.
You can help. Explore this site to learn more about the shrike
and what you can do to save it, as well as other endangered
grassland birds and animals.
